I’m feeling very grateful to have had the opportunity yesterday to take part in an Adler Cafe with the Adlerian Society UK Institute for Individual Psychology (ASIIP).

The topic we discussed was that of Encouragement asking how and why people might be discouraged at the moment?

We spoke about the importance of not going inwards in ourselves but to keep outward looking, showing concern for others and also showing ourselves empathy.

We noted the need to care for ourselves first in order to be able to care for others.  Caring for others can have an uplifting effect on our own mental wellbeing.  A sense of belonging keeps us connected.

We also considered how we can nurture encouragement and help people flourish during the challenges of Covid19.

Some responses included,

Tapping into our strengths

Reinforcing the strengths we see in others

Giving people space

Keeping focused on our priorities

Focusing on what’s within our control

Talking in positive ways about fear

Acknowledging those fears and accepting them, helping to normalises them

Finding ways to defuse fear and lead back to encouragement

Volunteering where possible

And of course the important role of humour.

We also discussed the importance of taking responsibility, facing up to the possibility of our own mortality or that of close relatives by having the difficult conversations about death.  Putting a plan in place so other family members know our health care and/or funeral wishes.  This can save a lot of upset when somebody becomes critically ill.

How and why might you be discouraged at the moment?

How can you Encourage Yourself  Encourage Others?

We are approximately two months into Covid19 Lockdown and the myriad of new challenges associated with it.

How do you “deal with what is,” what you are finding is your new, present day reality?

How do you avoid stressing about tomorrow or next week, the “what if?

Please share any strategies that have helped you and anything you have learned as a result.

I’m learning to expand my Covid Coping Toolkit.  A few things I’ve added include more meditation, more uplifting YouTube videos, replacing lost physical contact with online video chats via Zoom,  more family time, phone calls, walks and more appreciation of bird song which is easier to hear now with less traffic where I live.

I’m also learning to stay grounded in the moment, just taking it one day or even one hour at a time.  Sometimes there are challenging hours.   Yesterday’s challenging hour taught me that there is a miracle waiting within each grievance, to teach us something if we are ready to listen.

Note to self..”I found the miracle!  I became what Tolle calls the ‘watchful observer.’  I caught myself in the act.  And it taught me to look at my reaction to the event, not the event itself.  I realised that my reaction, which resulted in silence and resort to junk food during the grievance yesterday weren’t constructive choices.  I’ve since spoken about it, pointed out how I felt.  No blame, no bad feeling, no grievance!  No pain!  That is the miracle!

Roll on today!

Isn’t it amazing when you stop to think about it?  There are thousands of blogs and bloggers here, yet no two bloggers are the same or have the same voice.  Each voice speaks to me in it’s own unique way!  Do you agree?  I know I have come to recognise so many wonderful, insightful, warm and entertaining voices.  I hope you see yourself in my list!  Embrace your unique self!

And as for flaws!  Couldn’t we write a book on flaws and what a creation that would be! We all have flaws.  Learning to embrace our imperfection is the gateway to possibility…

Will you run to or away from that gateway today?

I think the key word here is “your.”  Don’t try to live your life to somebody else’s expectations or level of ability.

Have the courage to be imperfect and remind yourself that courage develops of the back of trial and error.  Courage means pushing yourself onwards in spite of the fear you feel.

How will you live your life to the best of your ability today?  How courageous do you feel?  Share what gave you courage in the past.

The behaviour I find difficult is feeling ignored.  Thankfully with each day that passes I am learning that I don’t need to feel ignored, I no longer want that feeling and I’m getting better at letting that feeling go.

I’ve also learned that when you learn how to find yourself you no longer feel isolated or lonely any more.  You realise you have a unique voice and you feel empowered to use it.

Anne reminds us that “Nobody likes to be… talked about behind their backs.”  Try today to catch yourself in the act of gossip.  It is not a nice personality trait to have and observing this habit in yourself, is the first step to changing it.  “Keep kindness to yourself and others high on your priority list.”

Here Mich of michnavs shines a light on gossip culture in the Philippines.  A worthwhile read…

‘Thank you,’ two simple words that are often not so simple to say.  Sometimes we brush off a compliment rather than acknowledging it and saying thank you.  Sometimes we have the best of intention but being busy or complacent, we neglect saying thank you for a kindness received.  Remember “A simple thank you is all that is needed.”

Thank you” for your visit and company today!

When have you struggled to say thank you?

I feel like Anne wrote this one especially for me!

I’m enjoying the challenge of showing up to my blog, almost daily, to share Anne’s warm and insightfully encouraging quotes.  I’m also writing a gratitude journal.  Reading back through my Journal on Christmas Day last was the best gift I gave myself for Christmas and I’m pretty sure my happiness in sharing some precious memories flowed over onto my family.

What do you do to encourage yourself and encourage others?
